UFAZ students participated in a field trip near Islamdagh
On February 24 and 25, 2022, UFAZ Oil & Gas Engineering and Geophysical Engineering students participated in the sedimentology fieldwork within the 'Geology of Sedimentary Basins and Reservoirs' course by UFAZ Invited Professor Dr Mathieu Schuster from the University of Strasbourg.
During the fieldwork, students of UFAZ visited the geological deposits of the late Miocene (23 - 5.3 Ma) - the Maykop series - Islamdag section, near the Perikishkul village. Students observed the sedimentological and lithological features of the rocks represented by organic-rich clays, also called 'black shale'. This complex of rocks is the source for the entire oil and gas potential of the South Caspian Basin. The students also studied the Quaternary period deposits, formed by an unknown paleo river. Also, students studied modern deposits in the river valley flowing near the village of Perikishkul.
To recall, on March 2, 2022 Dr. Mathieu Schuster will be delivering a lecture at the UFAZ mini-symposium dedicated to Earth sciences, and more specifically to geology. His topic concerns “Wind-driven lakes: The role of wind in the transfer and distribution of terrigenous sediments in large lakes”.
