Tofiq Nazarbayov, UFAZ 3rd year Geophysical-Geosciences engineering student and Mathieu Schuster, UFAZ Invited Professor of Geology of Sedimentary Basins
On February 28, 2019, UFAZ third-year Geophysical-Geosciences Engineering students visited “AZLAB” Exploration and Research Center, one of the largest research centers in the region together with Mathieu Schuster, UFAZ Invited Professor of Geology of Sedimentary Basins and Elshan Abdullayev, scientific expert at the Institute of Geography of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
Students firstly received a brief introduction about the safety instructions and then were introduced with the Core facility laboratory of AZLAB.
Cores are cylinders of rocks removed from the subsurface of the Earth. They provide geologists with samples which inform them about the rocks that are found below the surface at various depth. The students had the great opportunity to examine a portion of the Gunashli cores, which corresponds to an important reservoir rock system for oil.
Such laboratory trips are an integrated part of the curriculum of the Geophysical – Geosciences specialty of UFAZ.
AZLAB’s cooperation with BP began in 1996 when the GCA-1 well was drilled on the Chirag platform and will continue until 2024. During this period the center has been carrying out extensive tests of samples of the core, oil, condensate and gas taken from all exploration wells.
The companies cooperating with AZLAB include BP, Statoil, Total, Lukoil, EXXON Conoco Phillips, Karasu, Shirvan Oil, and Binaqadi Oil and etc. Moreover, the company’s performance has received recognition from companies based in Georgia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine and they are actively using the opportunities provided by the research center
