Participants of the 2019 Kangourou international summer mathematics camp are back in Baku!

2019-09-03

On April 3, 2019 in the frame of the weeks of Mathematics, UFAZ hosted for the first time the Mathematical Kangourou Competition for its first-year students, thanks to the initiative of Mathematics and Computer Science Professor Loic Cellier from Université de Strasbourg.

10 of our UFAZ students were ranked in the top 100 among more than 500 candidates at the French national level.

In order to congratulate them with those excellent results, UFAZ university sent Laman Jalilova (4th place and first girl of the competition), first-year Chemical Engineering and Rovshan Alaskarov (34th in the competition), first-year Oil and Gas Engineering student, to represent UFAZ during the Kangourou international summer mathematics camp 2019 in Avoine (France) during July 11-18 with the support and help of the French Embassy in Azerbaijan and the French Institute.

Now that participants are back to Baku, we are sharing warmest feedback from both students and Professor Loic Cellier, initiator and organizer of this competition at UFAZ:

Loic Cellier, Mathematics and Computer Science Professor from Université de Strasbourg: “I am very pleased with the participation of Laman Jalilova and Rovshan Alesgerov and their openness and keen interest for all activities offered in the international summer mathematic camp of the Kangourou Sans Frontières (KSF), took place during 11-18 July in Avoine, France.

It has been a real pleasure for me, as a head of this multicultural meeting, to organize and live such experiences with a group of young passionate scientists (KSF winners).

UFAZ students also had a chance to meet André Deledicq, founder and honorary president of KSF (association now federating 80 countries and more than 6.3 million participants each year).

I thank UFAZ Management for their confidence and financial support that allowed students to be part of such an experience.”

Laman Jalilova, UFAZ second-year  Chemical Engineering student: “First of all, Kangourou Math Camp was a great chance to dive into a seven-days journey of learning and fun as it was full of exciting activities related to both science and enjoyment.

This camp does embrace cultures and backgrounds from all over the world: this year there were participants from France, Turkey, Poland, Taiwan, etc. which implies that the camp is not just about the mathematics, but also promotes the understanding of identity and cultural diversity.

During the trip, all the participants of the camp had a real sense of adventure which turned the camp into something even more captivating. It was riveting to get to know the history of that region of France and visit breathtaking places such as Château du Clos Lucé - Leonardo da Vinci's Home in Amboise on the Loire, Château de Chinon, Chateau and Gardens of Villandry, Musée du compagnonnage, Château d'Azay-le-Rideau, etc.; to discover the french game - Pétanque which turned out to be extremely engaging; to paddle a canoe on a 16 km stretch of the rivers Vienne and Loire; all in all, to experience tons of things which will undoubtedly stay with me as the brightest memories from that very summer camp.

I would like to thank the French-Azerbaijani University for providing us with such a unique opportunity to become a part of an amazing “Le Kangourou des Mathématiques” Summer Camp in France. Moreover, I am grateful to our math and computer science teacher, concurrently the organizer of the camp - Loïc Cellier for hospitality, for becoming our travelling companion and being with us from the very beginning till the very end.

Visiting Summer Camp in France was a great way to wrap up the first half of the summer in the best way possible! Merci beaucoup et à la prochaine, France!”

Rovshan Alasgarov, UFAZ second-year Oil and Gas Engineering student: “My overall impression about France trip is great. I met friendly, helpful and warm-blooded people during my visit. French people have great history and culture.

We have been mesmerized with various nice buildings, squares and monuments in our first day in Paris. Mr Loic informed us with their history.

Four teams (French, Polish, Turkish and Azerbaijaini) participated in the Math Competition took place in Avion. During camp we visited Château de Villandry, Château de la Loire and other castles. We also visited "Clos Luce" (the last house of Leonardo da Vinci), went canoeing in the "La Vienne" river  and spent a day in Tours city. During the evenings, we usually played various games (abalone,pétanque, chess etc.) During camp I gained a number of friendships and got an opportunity to improve my French.

Everything was great and well-organized, thanks to UFAZ and Mr Loic Cellier.”

Since 1994, the association "Kangourou Sans Frontières"  (Kangourou without borders) organizes every year the "Kangourou" international mathematics competition for more than six millions of participants all around the world!

The Kangourou competition was initiated back in 1991 by two French teachers (André Deledicq et Jean Pierre Boudine) who decided to start the competition in France under the name "Kangaroo" to pay tribute to their Australian friends.

In the first edition, 120 000 juniors took part. Ever since the competition has been opened to pupils as well as to senior students, followed by 21 European countries forming altogether "Kangaroo without borders".
