Noelie de Cesare about development of a new metaheuristic optimization method

2018-05-11

On May 11 2018, at UFAZ we had a guest lecturer from the University of Southern Brittany (Lorient, France) Ms Noelie de Cesare who has been teaching to the second-year Oil and Gas engineering students during the week of May 7-12. She is the professor of metrology and statistics. Ms Cesare has presented her PhD work that she had also presented at NASA previously. She talked about development of a new metaheuristic optimization method: application to structural optimization and the development of new metamaterials. Ms Cesare has PhD in mechanics and structural optimization. She mainly covered during the lecture the construction of specific metamaterial that had certain characteristic of being made of steel but flexible as rubber. To accomplish this Noeli had carried our computations and algorithms based on birds swarming, where a bird tries to move in a way to find a better place and its motion affectthe surrounding birds, and inverse page-searching algorithm. Following these, she has been able to not only model and propose the desired material, but also she had succeeded to do it in a reasonably good time without having to use overly complicated and time-consuming computation.
