National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) organized a practical work program for UFAZ students

2021-02-26

On February 22-23,  the National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), French government space agency, organized a practical work program for UFAZ students. Training was conducted by CNES Image Processing Specialist Yannick Tanguy and Remote Sensing Applications Specialist Emmanuelle Sarrazin.

In total, 20 UFAZ students among Master of Geosciences,  Master of Data Sciences and Artificial Intelligence and third-year Geophysical Engineering and Computer Science specialties were selected for this program ( 8 M1GE and 8 M1DSAI, 2 L2GE and 2 L2CS)

First half-day included a typical (but simplified) treatment using Orfeo ToolBox (OTB) and the second half-day was more thematic and went into the details of the OTB classification framework.

Program Started with general presentation on what OTB is, and the mechanism. OTB Guided Tour, however, included the information on using OTB from Python, creating water masks on Sentinel 2 images with the OTB, combining different information to make a good quality mask, as well as the usage of it in a GIS tool. In the second day, practical work on "Land use classification" gave students an opportunity to understand what a land use classification is; use Sentin images el 2 and OTB to classify soils; understand the contribution of time series and know how to analyze the results.

Students received certificates upon completion of the program. Selected students who completed the program successfully, will also gain an opportunity to have their internships at the Toulouse Space Center (CST) in the upcoming academic year.
