UFAZ students receiving insights about Chromatography from UFAZ invited professor Maurice Millet from University of Strasbourg
In the week of December 9, UFAZ fourth-year Chemical Engineering students undertook their first practical work Analytical Chemistry, particularly, Chromatography, under the supervision of UFAZ invited professor Maurice Millet from University of Strasbourg.
Students experimented HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography), GC (Gas Chromatography), GC-MS (Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry) on the brand-new scientific equipment purchased by UFAZ this year. To observe some aspects of analytical chemistry as well as to identify different substances within a test sample, students are using some of laboratory equipment - two detectors, namely, mass detector and flame ionization detector. They perform the functioning of the system, test the different composition to see what happens during the separation and optimization.
Maurice Millet is a professor at the University of Strasbourg specialized in analytical chemistry. He is working on analytical chemistry that is applied in pollution, particularly in air pollution.
“We are preparing samples and developing analytical methods using GC and CMS for the quantification of organic pollutants in different substances, such as aerosol as an air composition, or rain as a liquid,” illustrates Prof. Millet of his work.
Laboratory practical works are commonly intercalated with theoretical and seminar classes in packages that cover single units of a given course program. This way students have an opportunity to receive an integrated view of the subjects.
UFAZ Invited Professors are French fully-fledged Professors who come to UFAZ throughout the 3 years of the Bachelor, on a weekly basis, to share their knowledge and skills with UFAZ students. This way our students are provided with the same study conditions and teaching staff as in French universities. These weekly visits guarantee that UFAZ students will comply at the end of their Bachelor with the academic and scientific requirements of the French Higher Education system.
Launched in 2018, UFAZ Scientific Laboratories, exclusive in Azerbaijan for their sophisticated equipment provide its students and faculty members with outstanding conditions for experimental courses. These laboratories are equipped in full compliance with the University of Strasbourg standards.
