UFAZ Chemical Engineering students
Since December 2018, UFAZ Chemistry Department and particularly professors Emil Jivishov and Sevda Jivishova have worked on the organization of the first Practical work of Organic Chemistry in the newly opened SP2 (scientific premises) lab building of UFAZ.
During their first practical work that took place on February 13, the students separated mixture of compounds (benzoic acid and beta-naphtol) using chemical methods and synthesized dibenzalacetone via Claisen-Schmidt condensation. Compounds obtained from the processes were identified by comparing their melting points to the melting points of known standards.
As it is done for the rest of the curricula, the program of every experimental work is provided by the University of Strasbourg. In addition, students are required to record each of their work results in a laboratory notebook. At the end of the semester, the laboratory notebooks are graded and the grades contribute to the total course grade of each student.
These UFAZ laboratories are equipped in full compliance with the University of Strasbourg standards. During more than one year French experts from the University of Strasbourg were activerly participating in the repair works as well as the set-up of the laboratory equipment, imported mainly from France and Germany.
Let us also note that this new 2500m² building includes: 3 chemistry laboratories, 1 chemical engineering laboratory, 4 laboratories in physics and applied physics, as well as 2 computer science labs (networking room, and super computer room) and working offices.
