On June 9, 2016 order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev was issued on the execution of "Joint French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ)" project
On June 9, 2016, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev issued an order on the establishment of the Azerbaijan-French University (UFAZ) under the Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) and the University of Strasbourg (Unistra).
The order states:
In connection with the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated May 22, 2015 No. 1242 "On approval of the Letter of Intent on the Azerbaijan-French University between the Minister of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Minister of National Education, Higher Education and Research of the French Republic" and guided by the Paragraph 32 of the Article 109 of the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan, in order to improve the higher education system in the Republic of Azerbaijan and expand relations with prestigious French universities, as well as to provide citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan with the opportunity to receive quality education within the borders of their home country without going abroad:
1. To give the right to the higher education institutions of the Republic of Azerbaijan involved in the UFAZ project independently select students based on the results of the entrance examination of the State Examination Center of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
2. To determine that the higher education institutions of the Azerbaijan Republic involved in the UFAZ project:
2.1. have the right to jointly manage the educational programs of the relevant higher education institutions of the French Republic to which they apply;
2.2. If the material and technical base allows, they can admit students on a paid basis in excess of the number of students studying at governmental basis places.
3. The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan:
3.1. To determine the number of students studying at UFAZ each year on governmental-basis;
3.2. To resolve the organization issues of material and technical base and financing of operational costs in the higher education institutions to be involved in the UFAZ project and;
3.3. to resolve other issues arising from this Order.
To recall, UFAZ currently offers bachelor's degree programs in Chemical Engineering, Geophysical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Oil and Gas Engineering.
Starting from the 2020/2021 academic year, new Master's Degree Programs will be available in Chemical Engineering / Physical Chemistry, Geosciences and Applied Computer Science (Big Data and Artificial Intelligence).
