DONATE TO UFAZ

An interview with the UFAZ Chemistry professor Sevda Jivishova

2018-12-19

What is your academic background?

I received my bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy and master’s education in Pharmacology, both from Anadolu University in Turkey. I obtained my PhD from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Philipps Universität Marburg in Germany. My research area is evaluation of plant extracts for their biological activities such as antioxidant and antiparasitic, and their chemical analysis using several chromatographic and spectroscopic equipment and methods.

Why did you choose the University of Strasbourg?

University of Strasbourg has almost a 400-year history since its first inception as a university. If we track the history of its development, we can see as it underwent many changes which contributed to and resulted in its status of a university with a world class education and research. Support to the development of education, research and innovation can be observed from 4 Nobel Prizes in the Department of Chemistry. It is a win-win situation for the faculty, the university and the humanity. For me it is important to work in an innovation-supporting and stimulating environment where I can contribute to the life and career of the students as well as be able to grow myself as an educator. I believe that the University of Strasbourg is able to provide all necessary conditions and it is an honor to work here.

What initiatives would you like to bring up while teaching at UFAZ?

Extracurricular activities are important in the overall development of the students. I would like to have a Chemistry club where students could have fun with science and where I can share my international experience in the teaching and the scientific research.

What do you think are the trends on the market for the graduates of chemical engineering?

Trends change with time; therefore, it is important for our students to constantly keep an eye on the events happening in the area of their interest. I would like to advice to pursue their interests, rather than interests of others. Following their own passion will help them to faster and productively develop their skills and enjoy the work they do. Otherwise, the time spent at work will be rather boring than productive and they won’t be able to advance in their careers. Whatever they do, if they do their best and work hard, it will pay off rather soon than later. Hardworking needs to start with their lessons and this can be achieved by reducing or cutting time from nonbeneficial and distracting activities, be it online or real-life. Technology and science develops fast, and people who spend time on unnecessary activities will be eventually lost in the middle of the road.

What are your favorite activities (hobbies)?

I like playing chess a lot. Reading classics is another activity I greatly enjoy as it helps me to experience different worlds and learn more about history of humanity. Spending productive time with my children is an activity that I enjoy the most.
