UFAZ Scientific Conferences 2018 / 2019: Prof. Pierre Collet on "The Future of Artificial Intelligence inspired by ancient and modern philosophers"

2019-04-22

EVENT PLACE: UFAZ Conference Hall

EVENT DATE: April 17, 2019

EVENT TIME: 4:15 p.m.

Abstract:

In "Ethics", Dutch philosopher Baruch Spinoza (17th century) proposed that the human mind was composed of Imagination and Reason. More recently, French philosopher Michel Serres (21st century) exposed that cognition was composed of three entities: Imagination, Reason, and Memory.

The conference will start by explaining Serres' interpretation of AI, i.e. one of the latest results in the externalization of corporeal functions by human technology, in the connexion with Spinoza's deep vision on the workings of the human mind. Then some recent results of Deep Learning will be presented, whose caveat emptor currently poses problems both in ethics and law because of Deep Learning systems can be seen as only the Imagination part of cognition. However, Reason can be included in modern Artificial Intelligence by using Modus Ponens reasoning, introduced by Greek philosopher Theophrastus (c. 371 – 287 BC) on which Expert Systems are based. Finally, one will see how Memory (the last component of cognition) can be added via Decision Trees that themselves rely on Boltzman's physical expression of disorder: entropy.

Overall, this conference will show how Imagination, Reason, and Memory can indeed be successfully combined together in order to create a reliable XAI (EXplainable Artificial Intelligence), by putting together findings by antique and recent philosophers and physicists.
